Top 10 Characters I’d Be Friends With From the Last Books I’ve Read

It’s been a while since I wrote about the ‘Top 5 Characters I Want as My Best Friend’, three years to be exact. As you can imagine, I have now found plenty more characters who I would love to have as friends. More specifically, they resemble my current inner circle and a few who I’m attempting to manifest into my circle!

Aunty Nandy from Love From A to Z

Do you know how much I love aunties? I know desi aunties in particular receive a lot of flak, but, for some peculiar reason, I have a bizarre and effortless sway with them. But sometimes there’s just that little something wanting… and that is activism! This is where Aunty Nandy enters the picture. See, not only is Aunty Nandy the ‘Live, Love, Laugh’ aunty I aspire to be one day with her visible joy and bubbly persona, she also backs Zayneb when it comes to advocating for social justice, and, most importantly, in the smartest way possible. Because I relate to Zayneb so much, an Aunty Nandy is exactly the kind of support and cheerleader I would have relished in my early to late teens (especially!) and still would appreciate now. She’s the kind of aunt we all need in our life, to be honest.

Ayoola from My Sister, the Serial Killer

I mean, obviously I will be locking up all the knives in the house or whichever house we visit. Serial killing aside, Ayoola really does love her sister, Korede, and would do the absolute most for her, I mean quite literally. For a serial killer, Ayoola is surprisingly fun, spontaneous and easygoing, and she can read people like a book. Plus, she clearly has a killer style and she’s a fashion designer to boot, so we would definitely have a shared interest in shopping.   

Camila Dunne from Daisy Jones & The Six

A woman who not only knows what she wants, but also knows how exactly to get it. Self-assured, confident, optimistic, go-getter. Just a few of the many positive traits I associate with Camila. Why do I want to be friends with her? I honestly don’t know, I just think she’s freaking amazing, and I’d like to know her ways. In a way, she reminds me of Ginny Weasley. Just… a seriously cool person. We’ll get to her and Billy eventually in my upcoming review of Daisy Jones & The Six.

Aryan from The Name of Red

Friend or a brother? Aryan would make the perfect brother. He’s so down-to-earth, practical, and exactly the kind of straight-shooting brother you need in your life! He doesn’t sugarcoat, he tells it how it is, and he has enough life experience to see right through you if you ever for a single second try to lie to him.

Connell from Normal People

You’d think Connell would make a great partner, but, honestly, he’s so caring, warm, intelligent and thoughtful that he’d make an amazing friend for life. I’m sure his stories are exactly as wonderful as he is and showcase the depth of his emotions and perception. Connell feels like a warm hug on a cold winter’s day.

Lara Jean Covey from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

I say friend, but essentially I’m recruiting Lara Jean Covey as a younger sister to receive baking treats because, let’s be real, she has superior taste in dessert. Bakes and cakes every day? That sounds like a win to me.

Alyosha Karamazov from The Brothers Karamazov

An absolute sweetheart. The warmth of a baker (and everything Michael Scott described Holly as). Now, I debated putting Alyosha on my list because, at times, in real life, I can sort of lose my patience with starry-eyed uselessness, however, in Alyosha’s case, he’s so compassionate and understanding that he can really truly make people, well, better people. His compassion creates results without ever stifling the true progress we all need.

Darcy from Queenie

As I previously described Darcy in my review of Queenie, she is the ultimate solutions-focused friend whilst maintaining a judgement-free environment for her friends (well, the one friend that we know of that is Queenie herself). She’s a great friend to Queenie, always logical with a solution for pretty much everything cushioned with an extra bit of emotional support. Darcy reminds me of a former work colleague as well, so there’s that.

Khalid Mirza from Ayesha at Last

Khalid Mirza is almost a carbon copy of my cousin who I’m close with. Both religiously conservative, but, by the end, they become slightly more open and understanding of how others choose to practice Islam. What you’ll find in Khalid is a loyal friend who truly will be there for you in both bad times and good times.

Jane Bennet from Pride and Prejudice

I love my unassuming and positive girly girls (I think it all began with Sanjana from Mohabbatein). Jane Bennet is so sweet and genuinely sees the good in everyone, she filters out the negative and focuses on the positive sides to people and somehow manages to achieve the perfect balance between general goodwill and seeing things clearly and rationally. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be friends with Jane Bennet? I’d like to add that though I probably wouldn’t exactly be good friends with Mr Darcy, I can’t escape the fact that, when it comes down to it, he would do the right thing for the people he loves and stand up against injustice vocally in a way that a Darcy from Queenie might not be able to. I am quite literally speaking from experience, read between the lines!
