Top Ten Favourite Desserts

“Dessert makes everything better.”

Ending November on a sweet note before the flurry of madness that is the final month of the year begins, I thought it would be a perfect time to gush over almost always welcome pictures of my favourite desserts. I don’t know about you, but dessert is my favourite course. I might not always finish my main course, but dessert? Well, I tend to deliberately make room for dessert.

Let’s get dribbling.

  1. Viennese Whirls

Can you believe that I only very recently discovered that this exists? Boy, have I been living under a rock, so thank you, Tesco, for enlightening me and bringing such indescribable joy into my life. These British biscuits contain some of my favourite things I could ever want in a dessert: biscuit (I am perfectly happy to eat biscuits on its own just FYI), buttercream and jam.

  1. Cheesecake

A good ole cheesecake will rarely disappoint… though I have experienced a fair share of eclectic cheesecake disasters. And I… hate chocolate cheesecake, a pair as terrible to behold as Rachel and Joey’s hardly believable love affair. Toffee cheesecake is beautiful, but the best kind of cheesecake is fruity cheesecake à la strawberry/blueberry style. Skewd’s blueberry cheesecake in Cockfosters, London is an absolute delight if you’re looking for a good blueberry cheesecake!

  1. Victoria Sponge Cake

A classic British favourite! Cake, raspberry and buttercream made even better when you top it with strawberries… gimme!

  1. Caramel Tart

I don’t know about other South Asian folks, but this is a common favourite amongst my fellow Bengali’s. If we feel like playing it safe, we look towards caramel tart because it so rarely fails to deliver. I don’t want it salted, I don’t want any chocolate layered on top, I don’t want any unnecessarily extra whipped cream; I just want a simple, old-school caramel tart with chocolate sprinkles that we got in primary school! There are a few things you shouldn’t let go of, and this is definitely one of them.

  1. Baklava

The mother of all Turkish desserts. I’m not the greatest fan of Turkish food, but if Turkish food has a crowning glory then it is this delicious pastry and nutty little thing! In small doses, of course, too much nutty will also make my throat really nutty. Oh, no, let me stop right there…

  1. Kheer

You probably haven’t heard of this one before! Kheer is my all-time favourite South Asian (Indian) dessert and us South Asians (well, Bengali’s) usually have it for dessert during weddings. It’s essentially a rice pudding topped with almonds, cardamom, pistachio and saffron. It is ridiculously sweet… and I like it like that.

  1. Coconut Cake

Alright, guys, don’t attack me. I LOVE coconut cake and Tesco will occasionally (or seasonally?) sell these fantastic coconut cakes. It’s fluffy, coconutty, creamy, and it’s cakey and you gotta at least try it once!

  1. Raspberry Dark Chocolate Torte

Rich dark chocolate (y’all know that dark chocolate is the best chocolate for me) and fruity deliciousness in the form of raspberries… that’s. the. stuff. Carluccio’s introduced me to it and Carluccio’s also stopped doing it and it’s just, ugh, why?! Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back, bring it back to me… please.

  1. Brown Derby

Now, this is a Wimpy franchise exclusive, so you can only get it from this one chain… but! Donut! Chocolate sauce! Ice cream! Remove the nuts! What a knock-out triple combination power move… and I don’t even usually like donuts unless it’s a jam donut.

  1. Tartlette Fraise

… I really have a thing for berries. A thing? Whew, sounds like an obsession methinks. Anyway-uh, this exquisite French delicacy is available at your nearest Paul bakery. FYI, Paul also make the BEST tuna niçoise I have ever eaten which is perfect if you’re looking for a lunchtime salad and their macaroons are delicious too! Paul, you’re doing amazing sweetie.

  1. I really hate dessert but I absolutely love cheesecake! It is one of those dessert that does not taste entirely sweet but it has a rather sour-sweet taste to it. Honestly, cheesecake is the only dessert I am able to eat, and I wouldn’t mind recommend it to all those people who doesn’t have a sweet tooth like me (I know they are out there somewhere, even if I haven’t met them)

    1. Come to think of it, cheesecake does have a sour taste to it, I wonder what they put in it to make it taste sweet and sour. 🤔 I think another blogger also said they love cheesecake! I guess it’s more universally appealing and plus there are so many types to choose from. I had a feeling that you wouldn’t be a fan of dessert though. 😶

    1. Cheesecake seems to be popular! Great, my mouth is watering even more, I’ve always wanted to try crepe brûlée, light and creamy sounds delicious. 😍 and oo! Thanks for that, this is the first I’ve heard of Beavertails and Nanaimo bars… the latter looks especially delicious.

  2. Vietnamese usually eat fruits for desserts. The most common are bananas, watermelon and guavas. We eat them every day.

Cakes are not really desserts for us, more like a treat. Something you eat between your meals, like a snack, you eat it separately to actually savor it because it’s not everyday you get a cake. Only the upper-middle class in Vietnam have the chance to buy cake as they are quite expensive. You are lucky if you get one cake per year, on your birthday.

    1. That’s so interesting! Guava is quite an uncommon fruit to eat in the West, so it’s cool to see that it’s very common in Vietnam. I love that watermelon seems to be very popular amongst people of colour.

Wow, I had no idea. That makes me feel quite sad. Cake once a year and you’re lucky to get it for your birthday? I wonder why it’s so expensive, it seems like it’s considered a luxury in Vietnam? If the upper-middle class have the chance to buy cake, that leaves a lot of people who don’t get the opportunity to indulge in cake. SIDE NOTE: this is why I’m loving your posts on Vietnam!

  3. Sophia. I am trying SO HARD to follow a diet right now, and your delicious pictures are making it very difficult. But in all honesty, thank you. I’ve never heard of some of these and they look incredible. I can diet when I’m sleeping.

  4. Most of these I haven’t tried, but dessert is dessert to me so I’ll eat anything (unless it’s fruitcake). But give me an apple crumble and I’ll be good for life

    1. I don’t think I’ve ever had strawberry cobbler, it looks AMAZING, OMG. Need to try it out one day, thanks for bringing it to my attention! And yep, chocolate lava cake, is awesome. 😍

        1. Yup! Agreed! Anything with dark chocolate is always good. I really hope you enjoy it if you ever get to try caramel tart, fair warning though, not all caramel tarts will be as delicious cos they get baked differently, but I hope it works out for you. 🙂

  5. Ohhh I love Cheese cake! Baklava isn’t my favourite (probably because I don’t like nuts of any kind) haha but it is a famous dessert even in my culture. Tbh I didn’t really know it was Turkish! 🙂 You learn something every day haha

    1. Seems like cheesecake is universally popular! Understandable about baklava, are you allergic to nuts or you’re just not a fan? Oo interesting that its famous in your culture! I do see baklava being served in Lebanese and Moroccan restaurants! Tagines are delicious too 🤤

      1. The baklava is a bit of both, when i was younger I hated it but then when I grew up I found out I had an allergy to nuts (maybe my hatred towards nuts was a warning 😂) 😋

  6. All of these look so delicious!! But I have no sweet tooth lol. I’m not big on desserts. Um, cakes and pan dulce (sweet bread) are typical desserts. I like Pastel de Tres Leches. Idk if it’s Mexican or Guatemalan though lol.

    1. That’s two people who don’t have a sweet tooth 🤭 I looked up pastel de tres and oh. My. God. Yassssssss! It says it’s very light as well and very very milky (love) but if I remember you’re not a fan of milk!
