The ever amazing @ MutedMouthful tagged me to participate in this challenge where I get to create a pick me up playlist for World Mental Health Day and you can also check out her awesome playlist via the link! Originally, I was supposed to write up something else, but when I saw this I just couldn’t resist.
I will follow up on MutedMouthful’s idea and list three words to describe her: talented, compassionate and brave.
Rules:
- Link back to ‘Pick Me Up Playlist’ creator – Laura Spoonie
- Tag the blogger who nominated you
- Mention how music helps your Mental Health
- List 10 songs that you would consider to be a part of your ‘Pick Me Up Playlist’ (optional: mention a little bit why each song is on your list)
- Tag 10 other bloggers to join in with the ‘Pick Me Up Playlist’ Challenge
Music & Mental Health
Firstly, major props to Laura for coming up with something as fun and creative like this because music really does have the ability to lift my spirits. Similarly, it has the ability to make it worse and especially when I listen to sad Bollywood songs because they will take you an extra and infinitely higher level of sad. But, thankfully, this is a pick me up playlist and all I can say is that I certainly feel happier and livelier when I listen to some select songs.
My Pick Me Up Playlist
1. Heaven – The Walkmen
Okay, so, this isn’t exactly a party anthem… but I think this is the most romantic song ever! This was the final song on How I Met Your Mother when Ted and Robin reunite (Ted at Robin’s window with the infamous blue French horn) and it just reminds me of the power of true love and friendship. My favourite lines: “Our gilded age may come and go, our crooked dreams will always glow,” and “stick with me, oh, you’re my best friend, all of my life, you’ve always been.”
2. Don’t You (Forget About Me) – Simple Minds
I discovered this song whilst watching Pitch Perfect and then watched The Breakfast Club and I fell in love even more. I especially love the ending where the guy is just singing la la la, don’t ask me why, I just do.
3. Balam Pichkari – Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani
(Pronounced baa-lum pich-kaa-ree – yeah jaa-vaa-nee heh dee-vaa-nee)
My favourite Holi song! It took me every effort to not include every song from this film because they’re all amazing. This is the song in the film where Deepika finally comes out of her shell and I think this is THE romantic film for the shy, anxious and nerdy. The dance moves are so much fun and the chemistry between the pair is crackling. There’s a bit at the end where they do a stage dive and when that part of the song arrives, I always picture myself doing this too (I hosted a lot of parties in high school and looking back, I wish I took advantage of this to do a stage dive).
4. Tujhe Mirchee Lage – Coolie No. 1
(Pronounced Too-jeh meer-chee luh-geh)
This song could not be any more Bollywood if it tried. It’s outrageous, outlandish, cheesy, vibrant and colourful. I mean the title literally means “if you find it spicy, then what am I supposed to do?” Check out the video, it won’t fail to disappoint you, you’ll be face-palming with the widest grin so hard. This song just makes me smile from the get-go.
5. Dimelo – Rak-Su
Easily the best song to release from the X Factor. I was so surprised to find out it was an original. “Hips like Shakira, smile like Camilla, got me feeling Latino!” One to get you dancing.
6. You’ve Got the Love – Florence and the Machine
My aunt-in-law’s friends danced and mimed the lyrics to this song for her when they performed at her mehndi (pronounced men-dee) (translation: bridal shower) and I just want someone to sing this to me for once. *sigh*
“Sometimes it seems the going is just too rough
And things go wrong no matter what I do
Now and then it seems that life is just too much
But you’ve got the love I need
To see me through
‘Cause sooner or later in life,
The things you love you lose,
But you got the love
I need
To see me through.”
I mean, aren’t the lyrics just amazing?
7. Wannabe – Spice Girls
Requires no explanation, really.
8. Maahi Ve – Kal Ho Na Ho
(pronounced maa-hee veh – kull hoh naa hoh)
A classic Bollywood engagement song. Also, Aman is Bollywood’s Jack Dawson.
9. Bom Diggy – Zack Knight and Jasmin Walia
FUN. FUN. FUN. I think even if you’re not into Bollywood songs, you might enjoy this one!
10. High Heels – Ki and Ka
(pronounced kee and kaa)
Again, another one which I feel people who don’t listen to Bollywood music will enjoy.

Thanks for the tag! I will definitely be doing this! Don’t You (Forget About Me) is probably on my sad playlist! I love the la la la part, too, but it makes me feel nostalgic in a sad way.

That’s so strange, it’s on my happy list and it’s on your sad list, music really is subjective. I see what you mean, for some odd reason, it conjures up memories of childhood glory days. 😪

The engagement song is one of the loveliest things ever. (spanish subtitles came through lol). But omg what happened to the guy at the end??? I need to know!!
Shakira is on my playlist haha. And the Spice Girls duh. Ooh and the Breakfast Club is one of the greatest movies ever.
Thanks for the tag! I’m actually going to work on this one asap haha. But how do I narrow it down to 10?!

Pahaha, oh my god, I completely forgot that old school Bollywood films are quite a hit with the Spanish and German market. Girl, imma just tell you, he about to die soon is what. That’s right where I stop watching the film (can’t hack it).
Is it Hips Don’t Lie or Whenever, Wherever? Spice Girls best girl band ever.
The struggle was real, you’ll be stuck thinking about which ones you need to cut for a while. Can’t wait to see your choices!

He dies?!?! 😮 but why?? He looked so happy dancing and singing!
I got the songs all picked out so you’ll have to wait and see which Shakira song I picked lol. And agreed. Spice Girls are the best girl band to have ever lived.

Thanks for the tag! I’m so excited for this one. Spinnette and I both love music a lot. However we like vastly different music. I think it’d be interesting to have us both do it and compare.
Most of the songs I listen to are pretty negative, but they make me happy. It’ll be an interesting “Pick Me Up” playlist.

Haha, perhaps Spinette’s one could be ‘Pick Me Up’ and yours could be ‘No, Put Me Back Down.’ 😉

Hey Sophia! have you heard music of Zindagi na milegi dobara (ZNMD)? I find it’s entire album uplifting. 😀 Especially the song – Der lagi lekin. (people just assume it to be sad and I don’t understand why).

I really need to get around watching that film in its entirety because I love Farhan Akhtar (he is just so dreamy) (actually I’m going to watch it today now), but I haven’t heard of Der Lagi, I have heard Senorita though. Thanks for the song and film recommendation! ☺️

I think you and my sister must be in the same year, she’s doing her exam prep as well! 🙂
It’s such a fun and vibrant song, Ranbir and Deepika killed it. Paha, we live in the same country! I’m from London. 🙂

It would be so cool if your sister and I go to the same school! I think this is just and England exam week season and its sooooo horrible! The song is really fun and cheery it actually made me smile that day and I was really worried about something that day (I can’t remember what). We do live in the same country but not the same city sadly. Though mine is not that far away from London. 🙂

I think you guys are in the same year, so who knows, maybe one day your paths will intersect? You might just end up at the same university together. ☺️
So happy to hear that it made you smile.. it done its job! YAY! 🎉
As long as it’s not Birmingham, it is okay. 😝

Okay, thank God, lol, because otherwise I would have read your comments in my mind with a Birmingham accent and that would have been torture. 😂 Who knows, you might just if you’re interested in social care 😀

I think I’ll leave Social Care to my Cousin she is waaaaayyy better at it than me 😂. Thank god you don’t have to read my comments in a Birmingham accent that really would have been torture haha

That’s so strange, I would have never pegged you for a science girl, but that’s so refreshing to hear! My friend has worked in a lab, so if you ever need any help in that field, let me know, I’ll see what I can do! 🙂 I’m already a grown-up, but one day I want to publish my poetry, right now I just keep the more personal ones to myself and I think in 15 years time, I would love to teach. 🙂

I find that I am inclined to listen to music when I am down; writing is a positive outlet as Well. Have you ever visiulized yourself performing? That does the trick; it gets your mind off things. I have been nominated for best performance and taken home a few Grammys in Bollywood. You’ve got to love music. 😂😂😂

I think every single one of us have visualised our selves performing on a stage, at a wedding, the whole world watching… and I’ve done it, it was a complete blast! 🙂 hahaha, you listen to Bollywood music? Do you have any favourite Bollywood songs? Bollywood is awesome!
